Meeting new people can be stressful, especially when you move to a new city– or even state — and want to make friends. Your college years are no exception. Oftentimes, professors or leaders of student organizations will use “icebreakers” to introduce people to each other, and it can be daunting. But it doesn’t have to be. Here are three ways to make meeting people easier in college.
- Check your campus events calendar. You can choose from a wide variety of events that align with your interests, or choose something out of your comfort zone to say you tried something new.
- Take a walk. If you’re new to the area, there’s probably a store or hangout spot you don’t know about yet. Exploring the area is a great way to find things “off the beaten path” and make small and unique connections to your new home.
- Raise your hand in class. This might seem like an odd way to directly make friends, but really, when you are vocal and proactive in public areas, you will seem more approachable to people. That way, you don’t even need to make the first move in a conversation!
College is a time to meet new people. You might not think that you’ll meet your next best friend or soulmate in college, but when you put yourself out there to new experiences and connections, the odds are higher.
