Introductions are scary – a first impression makes or breaks the way others perceive us… or so we think.
For incoming first-year students, social anxiety is at an all-time high. Many freshmen put immense pressure on themselves to strive for perfection within their initial introductions in a new environment. But the truth is, there is no magic formula. Just be yourself!
Now put on your best smile and take a deep breath because these are three ways to break the ice while being organically you:
- Dont be afraid to talk about yourself. Many get wary when talking about themselves in initial interactions for fear of sounding arrogant or self-obsessed. But when meeting someone new, you should talk about yourself and your interests, as this can spark further conversation or even build connections. Be careful not to sound cocky; make sure you also ask questions, but you are interesting, and people want to hear about it!
- Agree to disagree. A common phenomenon when breaking the ice is people pleasing; don’t just “yes” the person you are talking to to make them like you; share your varying ideas and viewpoints because that makes you unique. Never conform to somebody else’s ideas in hopes that they will like you, as it will start the relationship on untruthful terms.
- Live in the moment. Relax! You’re amazing, and people want to hear about it. The pressure intensifies when getting to college, but just take a deep breath and be yourself! As time passes, the conversations will get easier, but there is nothing better to be than true to yourself.
The best way to break the ice is by being yourself. Here are more ways to stay true to yourself in college!
