Living With Your Best Friend: Will You Actually Kill Each Other?

The answer is yes. Yes, you will.

Back in high school when everyone was making final college decisions, my best friend and I decided we would live together in the dorms. As soon as we started telling people, they’d reply saying things like “oh boy, you guys will end up hating each other” or “that’s not going to end well”.

I’m the type of person who hates it when people assume what my future looks like or what decisions I’m going to make. I’m sure you might also share a similar sentiment.

So when I would hear statements like that, I would make a mental note of how I would make sure my best friend and I would come out of freshman year not hating each other.

It’s important to note that this friend of mine and I had known each other since we were 10 and been best friends since we were 12. So it’s been a while.

I went into the year expecting it to end horribly but determined to make sure it wouldn’t. And it went pretty much the way I expected. Okay, not 100% the way I expected, but it was fairly accurate.

First, let’s make one thing clear: we are still friends and we don’t hate each other. So, it didn’t end horribly. HOWEVER, that’s not to say that we didn’t have our fair share of fights throughout the year.

Messy Desk vs. Clean Desk

She and I are inherently different when it comes to our lifestyles. I like to keep everything ridiculously clean and organized and she tends to be more chaotic and messy. She sleeps early and I don’t sleep. Both of these things and more just led to some fighting and we almost killed each other.

I digress.

I expected to end up hating my best friend since everyone we knew told us it was a bad idea. But, I’m quite happy that my reality had us stay friends 🙂

Honestly though, best of luck to you if you’re living with your best friend. It can get tough sometimes; but, as long as you’re not disrespectful and talk about problems, you’ll be fine!
