The transition from high school to college can be a scary one. Not only are you leaving your family behind to live on your own for the first time, but you’re also moving into a place where you may not know many people. Fortunately, there are tons of opportunities to meet new people and make great friends!
1. Join a student organization.
From sign language to improv comedy, there are nearly 1,000 student organizations that you can get involved in. Head over to the student org fair in the fall, or visit the Wisconsin Involvement Network to see what organizations you might be interested in joining!
2. Talk to people in your classes.
As scary as it might seem, talking to people in your classes is a great way to get to know new people. Even if the person you talk to doesn’t become your new best friend, it’s great to have someone you can study with or get notes from when you miss class.
3. Join an intramural sports team.
Joining an intramural team is a great way to both stay active and meet new people. Don’t have a team? Don’t worry! You can sign up as a free agent so that teams looking to fill a spot on their roster can reach out to you to join their team!
At the end of the day, as long as you make an effort to put yourself out there, you’ll have no problem making some amazing friends at UW-Madison.
