What Major is Right for You: How to Determine Your Course of Study for the Next 4 Years

At just eighteen, it is hard to decide the future of your career before you have even stepped on campus. Here are some ways to explore everything that UW has to offer:

Explore UW’s Course Offerings Through General Education Requirements

Every student is required to complete general education credits and breadths as part of their well-rounded education at UW. This is a great way to explore the diverse courses, major and certificate options at UW. Students must complete courses in the areas of Humanities, Social Science, and Natural Science. This allows students to take classes in an area of interest they may not be thinking of pursuing full time. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up loving it!

Meet with UW’s Faculty

If you are interested in a certain field of study or a specific class, reach out to the professor. UW’s faculty is here to encourage us to explore different subjects and are always ready to answer any questions you have. Additionally, if you find a class is full, reach out to the professor. Chances are they’ll be able to find you a spot by the end of the first week back to school!

Get Involved

Another way to explore different fields of study is to join a student organization. Student orgs are often connected to certain schools within the university, and can give students a taste of what that school has to offer. Even if you end up in a different major, student orgs can help connect students in different majors and allow students to explore multiple job fields simultaneously.

No matter what path you choose, never forget to explore all that UW has to offer!
