Starting fresh at a big campus like UW-Madison can feel exciting, but also overwhelming. I remember stepping onto campus for the first time, wondering how I’d find my place among thousands and thousands of students. It turns out, feeling at home doesn’t happen all at once, however, here’s how it started for me:
1. Say yes to one student org (even if you’re unsure).
When I first joined Phi Gamma Nu (a business frat), I didn’t know anyone. But after a few awkward icebreakers, I found myself looking forward to seeing those same faces every week. You don’t have to find the “perfect” org, just start somewhere you’re passionate at.

2. Explore jobs and roles that put you around people.
Some of my closest friendships started at my part-time job on campus. Whether you’re scanning IDs at the gym or helping at events, casual chats often turn into real connections. Plus, you’ll get paid to be social, so it’s a win-win.
3. Get lost on purpose.
Seriously. Wander around campus without a destination. That’s how I stumbled into a cultural festival I had no idea was happening, and made friends who shared my background. Sometimes you find your niche when you’re not looking for it.
College is what you make of it. UW-Madison is full of people who feel just like you, waiting for someone to say hi.
