Feel a Part of the University Community
The college transition can feel insurmountable– harder than trekking up Bascom itself.
You’re in a new place, dealing with isolation from friends & family, and experiencing a new school environment. BUT– you and every other incoming freshmen are experiencing it together! Embrace the shared intimidation. Let it foster connection.
As a student coming from a small California high-school, I realized that the best way to find my place on campus was to follow these 3 tips!
Tip 1
Take advantage of the campus and student resources & organizations!
At UW-Madison, you have access to a quintessential college campus with numerous student resources & organizations.
Find Your Community by:
- Attending the Student Org Fair
- Joining a Greek Organization
- Finding a Sports Club
I talked to new people and formed new friendships by doing this!
I also met my current roommates/best friends from my dorm last year!
Tip 2
Stay healthy to maximize your well-being!
The transition to college life was super chaotic for me. I found it important to prioritize physical and mental health by:
- Staying active at the RecWell, as it’s free for students
- Dropping in at University Health Services for mental health support or medical care
The most important part of adjusting to college life is being able to find a balance in your lifestyle.
- Balance academics and socials
- Manage your stress levels
- Eat and sleep regularly
- Attend your classes
