When You’re Lost on the Career Path, Start Exploring

The best professional advice I can give when it comes to career path anxiety is to treat college, and life for that matter, as an exploration.

I had to work harder than the average student at UW-Madison to make it to campus. I applied during my senior year of high school and ended up having to apply again and transfer after my first year of college. Then, after my first semester, I had to apply to the journalism program. I got in and finally had everything I worked so hard for, but I ended up hating the first week! I freaked out! I met with my academic advisor, and her advice is what I write now: get curious, ask questions, meet people, and create lists of what you do and don’t like.

If you are like me and wondering what you got yourself into, or you doubt the major you picked, start asking questions and exploring. The best place to go for information gathering is the academic advisors and the career advisors. If there is a professor you love or you know that other students love, go to their office hours and chat about how they got to where they are.

Lastly, if you face the idea that there is no big arrival to a perfect destination, then you can start making some headway on the exploration path. While people can love their jobs and where they work, there are still things or tasks that people aren’t absolutely in love with doing. You never know what conversation you might have that could impact you, so start asking questions and get busy exploring.
