The size of the UW-Madison campus may seem intimidating at first, but I can promise you’ll get the hang of it in no time. It may seem basic, but I can guarantee that your college experience will be better if you take advantage of the beautiful campus you’re living on and WALK! Walking can help familiarize you with the city, burn off your freshman 15 and experience everything Madison has to offer.
1. NAVIGATE YOUR NEW HOME
There’s no better way to learn the ins and outs of Madison than wandering around. Knowing your way around campus allows you to get places faster and feel safer in this unfamiliar city. For example, I can promise you that Google Maps will NOT provide the most efficient route from Camp Randall to Ian’s Pizza on game days.
2. STAY FIT
There’s a reason the freshman 15 is talked about so often—it’s REAL. While it may not seem like much of a workout, walking around campus is actually a really good way to stay fit. I swear Bascom Hill gets bigger every time I walk up it. However, I encourage you to walk up the hill rather than taking the bus.
3. EXPLORE THE EXPERIENCES
Walking to Picnic Point or spending a Saturday morning at the farmers market are just a few examples of the fun activities Madison has to offer. Walk around and see what you stumble upon.
So whenever you’re thinking you may want to uber or bus around campus, I urge you to rethink your decision. Make the decision to walk around campus and explore the beautiful city we’re lucky to call our second home!
