The Freshman 15 – Let’s Talk About It

We’ve all heard of the freshman 15 – and if you’re worried, here’s how to help prevent it. Coming into college, your microbiome changes as you adjust to the new college atmosphere. New food, new people, and a new environment. It is inevitable that your body will change. Here are some tips to stay ahead before the new and exciting college lifestyle!

  1. Don’t overthink it. Your body will change, but that does not mean that it is anything to be concerned about. As you get older, it happens naturally, especially during stressful times and new beginnings. There is nothing wrong with your body changing, but sometimes it is hard to manage with a busy schedule, and long days. It is crucial to be confident and enjoy the changes you may face.
  2. Walk when you can. When it comes to going to a larger school, there are typically bus systems put into place. The bus is a quick and effective way to get to where you need to go. However, it is also important to get in those steps when you can! It’s good for the body and mind to get outside and moving.
  3. Plan, plan, plan. Each day can be exponentially different from the one before. Before you go to bed, make sure you are thinking about your schedule for the day ahead. What time are your classes, what meetings do you have, when is your free time, are you doing anything socially? You can find ways to make a good schedule here.
  4. Be Intentional. Every day is a new opportunity! Make sure to be intentional with the small things. Get good sleep, eat clean- but remember everything is good in moderation, and workout when you have the time!

College is a new and exciting experience! These are just some tips to stay healthy, and to help manage the stress of the “freshman 15.” Don’t overthink it, but remember to be intentional with the small things, and do things for your physical and mental health to ease your mind.
