It was the first week of freshman year, and while unpacking, my roommate texted me to meet her in her friend’s dorm across campus. I was so nervous about showing up alone and meeting new people that I hesitated in front of the elevator, considering heading back to my dorm. I’m so grateful I didn’t, because in the elevator were 3 girls, and exchanged compliments led to exchanged snapchats, which led to us sitting together at graduation 4 years later, a lifelong friendship solidified. Now, not everyone will find their people in the first week, but this story emphasizes the most important aspect of building your community: put yourself out there!

Finding your people at a school with over 35,000 students can seem scary, but you’ll find that some of your best connections stem from simple interactions, such as in class, in the dining hall, or in my case, the elevator. Put yourself in places with new people, and talk to everyone around you!
You can also find people with shared interests by joining a student organization. The Wisconsin Involvement Network (WIN) lists all the organizations Madison has to offer, and with over 1000, there’s something for everyone.
If you’re unsure how to initiate a connection, I like to start with a compliment. It’s a great way to break the ice and prompt a conversation.
Being nervous about making friends is normal, but I promise it’s easier than you think. Be open, and before you know it, you’ll find the people who will help make the next 4 years the best of your life!
