Beginning college is one of the most daunting tasks faced by incoming students at this point in their lives. Having now gone through the process myself, I would have certainly done it differently if I had the privilege of hindsight.
First of all, I cannot emphasize enough how not-scary networking can be if you do it in the right ways. While attending career fairs and similar events is a good start, I found that networking can be as simple as meeting as many new people as you can, and building more enjoyable social bridges. Any opportunity that I have been presented that interested me came from somewhere outside of a job fair.
A regret of mine regarding my first year of college was not getting involved enough with student organizations. These are a good way to build bridges and network while also making friends and collaborating on projects that interest you. For me, these were way more beneficial than career fairs and events. They also help you get out of a dorm room and socialize!
I know a lot of students struggle with what to put on a resume after college, and even during it. For finding that first internship, using work done at a student organization can be a really great way to fill out a resume with hands-on experience. You can also gain numerous references by engaging with student organizations.
