How To Make Friends at Madison

Being a freshman in a school as big as UW-Madison can be terrifying, especially if you don’t know anybody coming in. You may be all on your own, having to start new with new friends but it doesn’t have to be scary. So here are 3 tips to help you meet new people at UW-Madison.

Classes

You are probably spending on average12-15 hours a week in class which means there are plenty of opportunities to talk to others in your class. Many classes have group projects or labs which is a great time to talk about many things. Also, it is beneficial that those in the same class have similar interests, even in gen eds. So don’t be afraid to talk to the person next and ask for their number or snap to stay connected. One of my roommates for next year was someone I met in class.

Dorms

When you are not in class, you are most likely back at the dorm. I think it’s very useful to keep your door open in the first couple of days after moving in so people can stop by and say hi. It also goes both ways, go out into your hallway and introduce yourself to others. My main friend group that I hung out with were all my neighbors.

Clubs

Don’t be afraid to go to a club you are interested in even if you don’t know anyone who will be there. In my first semester, I decided not to go to club meetings for a club I was interested in because I was nervous but in my second semester I went and I loved it. It was my favorite club and I met some close friends.

Friends come and they do so don’t be heartbroken if you don’t stay connected to people as much as you thought you would. There are many opportunities to meet new people so don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Take new chances and you won’t regret it.
