Starting out freshman year can be scary! I remember my freshman year, feeling unsure about what major to choose or how to even begin to choose a career path. But any step is a step in the right direction.
An extremely helpful and easy first step to take is to talk to upperclassmen. Even just asking them simple questions like “Why did you choose this major” can give tremendous insight into what you might want to do. Asking your professors questions also is super helpful! They are there to help and guide you with whatever you need help or guidance with. Even just by sending them an email or stopping into office hours can go a long way!
Another helpful thing I recommend doing is getting a job/internship the summer after freshman year that could align with something you want to do in the future. It doesn’t need to be your dream job, just something to get your foot in the door. Whether that’s volunteering, shadowing someone, or working a job that helps build basic communication skills, you will gain experience that will help guide you for and in the future.
One last thing that is extremely helpful is taking advantage of our schools resources. You can book a resume appointment through success works which can help you with what you should continue to work on in the future. They also offer career fairs, mock interviews, etc that are really helpful.
