From Nervous to Ready: Freshman Starter Pack

College is full of new experiences, relationships, goals, and so much more. As a result, it can sometimes feel intimidating to step out of your comfort zone. Even so, do not fret! Confusion and feeling lost are totally normal, and it takes time to adjust throughout your undergraduate years. At least, that’s how it was for me.

For me, it took more than one week, and even several semesters, to find my place at UW-Madison. Here are three things you could try that might help you find your place as an incoming freshman!

  1. Don’t be afraid to step out of your dorm room

Meeting new people can be extremely overwhelming. However, your dorm floor might be the easiest place to make new friends. Get out. Go to the student lounge areas. Try to start a conversation with at least one person, and believe me, these moments might lead to some of the best relationships you make during college.

  1. Explore Student Organizations

Ranging from Arts to Professional/Career experiences to Cultural & Ethnic student organizations, UW-Madison offers a variety of communities to get involved in. Sign up for a couple and try them out! You might be able to find one you resonate with.

  1. Say Yes to Random Adventures

UW-Madison has its annual Wisconsin Welcome event to celebrate new students’ arrival on campus every year! Take advantage of these opportunities and attend as many as you can. Other than that, be a little spontaneous and explore the streets, buildings, and get lost!
