First Steps to Success: Professional Development for Freshman Students

Undergraduates attend the UW Majors Fair in Union South’s Varsity Hall at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

Coming into campus, It’s both exciting and nerve-wracking. As a first-year student, you’re introduced to many opportunities and can have the freedom to do whatever you want in your 4 years here at UW-Madison. However, this is also when the real world starts kicking in. I remember the first time I stepped onto campus, filled with anticipation and a hint of nervousness. As a first-generation student, I did not know much about networking and putting myself out there—something that I deeply regret not doing.

Although, it’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed as a first-year student, especially when navigating unfamiliar territory like networking and professional development. But it’s never too late to start building those connections and exploring opportunities to grow outside of the classroom!

Here are a few recommendations I offer to incoming freshmen to get ahead of the game:

  1. Create a LinkedIn Profile: This allows you to become familiar with the business world and allows you to network with your peers and professional individuals.
  1. Seek Mentorship: These mentors will help you navigate campus life and your career development. They can be helpful even after you finish your freshman year.
  1. Join Student Organization: Not only does this boost your resume, but connecting and networking with individuals with similar interests can take you to places!

These steps are great for starting your professional career—not only will this set you up for success, but it will also help you build the skills you need to get internships and full-time positions in the future.
