Finding Your People at UW Madison

Starting college can feel like being dropped into the middle of a snowstorm, you’re excited, but also kind of lost. Honestly, that’s exactly how I felt my first semester. But once I started branching out, things slowly came together. Here are three ways I found my place at UW Madison:

1. Try Things That May Seem Intimidating or Scary
I went to the Org Fair thinking I’d just browse. Instead, I signed up for a club and met some of my best friends. Whether it’s clubs, student government, or improv comedy, doing something unfamiliar can lead to unexpected connections. Check out: https://win.wisc.edu/ to explore 1000+ student orgs.

2. Say Yes to Random Invites
From spontaneous dinner plans to hiking trips at Devil’s Lake, saying yes helped me meet people outside my dorm bubble. Even if something’s not exactly your thing, go anyway. You never know who you’ll meet.

3. Turn Small Talk into Real Talk
Instead of just asking where someone’s from, ask about what music they like, what class they’re excited about, or where they’ve explored in Madison. Deeper conversations build real friendships.

UW Madison is huge, but that just means there’s definitely a place for you here!
