Finding the Right Path

As an incoming freshman, it can be difficult to know what path you should follow. Most students enter college unsure of what career they want when they graduate. Here are a few tips that I (senior) learned along the way!

  1. The first thing I would recommend is to enroll in a variety of different entry level course that catch your attention. When I was a freshman, I focused on completing my general education course, but looking back now, I see that that was not necessary. Taking courses that cover many different career paths help you understand what you enjoy and what you don’t. If you really like a digital media class, sign up for another one for the next semester. College is about exploring your interests, so don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
  2. Don’t be afraid to change your mind! It is never to late to switch paths, even if it makes you feel like you are behind your classmates. Everyones educational journey it different. I know it can be scary to decide to switch majors once you have already declared it, but it is better have to add another semester then it is to not enjoy your job the rest of your life.
  3. Ask questions! When I was a freshman, I hardly talked to my professors or students who were older then me. If you are interested in becoming a journalism major, see what your professor has to stay about possible career paths. Taking to classmates who have taken more journalism classes than you can offer you insights into what the future holds your you as well.
