Embracing University Life: Tips for Finding Friends, Getting Involved, and Exploring Campus

Staring college is a thrilling yet daunting adventure. As a freshman, it’s natural to feel a bit overwhelmed. I vividly remember my first days on campus, unsure of where to start or how to connect with others. However, through trial and error, I found my footing. Here are three tips that helped me feel a part of the Madison community, which I hope will guide you on your journey as well.

Tip 1: Join Clubs and Organizations

When I first arrived at UW, the sheer number of clubs and organizations seemed overwhelming. I didn’t know where to start, but I soon realized that joining these groups was the fastest way to make friends and feel involved.

Find Your Interest

Explore different clubs that align with your hobbies or interests. Whether it’s a sports team, a debate club, or a music society, finding like-minded people makes it easier to connect. I joined the university’s Computer Science club because I had a passion for coding , and it became my gateway to meeting some of my closest friends.

Attend Club Fairs

UW hosts a club fair at the beginning of each semester. These fairs are a fantastic opportunity to learn about different organizations and meet their members. I found it helpful to speak with current members to get a sense of the club’s vibe and activities. Follow this link to learn more https://www.wisc.edu/student-life/

Don’t Overcommit

While it’s tempting to join multiple clubs, it’s crucial to manage your time effectively. I initially joined 3 clubs, only to realize I couldn’t keep up with all of them. I eventually focused on two that I was most passionate about, which allowed me to participate more actively and form stronger connections.
