Being Accepted at UW-Madison as a Freshman

You have made it! You are now in the wonderful land we call home, Madison. Here are a few tips for finding friends and your community.

  1. Make friends with neighbors – The people in your dorm are going to be the first people you meet and spend time with. Get to know them! You might not be friends with them forever, but you might meet your best friend from one of their friends, and its always nice to have someone to spend time with.
  2. Go to the Org fair – This is how I was able to find my community. Set aside an hour or two to walk through the Kohl’s Center at the org fair and check out all the cool clubs and organizations that are available through the university. The nice thing about clubs and organizations is that the people who are in the club already have similar interests to you, making it easier to make connections with the people around you.
  3. Keep an open mind – One of the best parts of college is all the types of people you are going to meet. Everyone comes from a different part of the world and is not going to be the same as the people from your high school. Use that to your advantage! Some of my best friendships have been with people who are nothing like me!
