Writing is something that I’ve always loved to do. Whether it be writing essays for classes or writing in my journal, I have found that it is the best way to express thoughts. Because of my passion for writing, I have always known that I wanted to go into the field of communications/journalism. But when I got to UW-Madison, I had no idea where to begin getting involved with this.
In the second semester of my freshman year, I was told about the Association for Women in Communications. Immediately after hearing the name of the club, I was interested; given that I am female and love to write. I decided to join!
The Association for Women in Communications is incredibly helpful. By attending meetings, offered every other week, great insight is given into jobs available in communications. We had many guest speakers, ranging from the director of communications at Planet Propaganda to the Director of News and Media Relations at UW-Madison. The club gives opportunities to network with professionals and form connections that could potentially help in the future! The club also offers J-school workshops, which helped me make my decision to apply for the Journalism school.

It’s amazing to think that UW-Madison offers such a wide variety of clubs, geared towards all genders and majors. It is so easy to pass up some of the opportunities offered freshman year, but you should definitely take advantage of them! If you are a girl who is considering the communications field, apply for AWC. You won’t regret it!
