I started my college journey entirely convinced I would study Math and Economics. I would’ve bet anything that my experience would’ve been nothing but indifference curves and calculus. Little did I know how wrong I was! Incoming freshmen, you might be wrong too. However, I have some good news for you: that’s a good thing! In this post, I’ll talk about how to find your path and major here at UW-Madison.
1: Most importantly: Keep an open mind!
What’s worse than switching majors after your first semester? Graduating and realizing you regret your decision! Harsh words, but true. Keep an open mind to everything that comes your way. Don’t make the same mistake I did and keep yourself in a narrow lane.
2. Think about your future (but not too much!)
Now, I study Economics, Philosophy and Political Science. I love my Economics classes, but I know I don’t want to continue studying Economics in graduate school. That’s okay! Not every class you take needs to count towards your job prospects. While you should be progressing in a field of study relevant to your future, it’s good to branch out and diversify your interests. Not everything you do needs to play into a fifty-year plan!
3. Join a FIG, if you can!
I wanted to end with a direct recommendation! First-Year Interest Groups (link here!) are a great way to meet other students and connect over interests. Finding community here is important in finding yourself and your passion. I can’t recommend it enough!
You’ll find your way through college… All the way to graduation!
