The best way to beat the freshman blues is to find a group of people you mesh well with, your “niche” if you will. I’m going to outline the best ways for you to explore the activities at your new home away from home, and find people to enjoy them with!
1. Join Clubs or Teams for Your Interests
The Wisconsin Involvement Network can help you search through the over 1,000 student organizations. This is a great way to meet new people that are guaranteed to share at least one of your interests.
The org fair at the start of each semester is another great way to explore these organizations!

2. Meet People Through Your Dorm or Apartment
The people living around you can be the most convenient friends your freshman year. It’s easy to get together and have lunch and dinner when you know you live right by the same dining halls or restaurants. Try talking to the people living next door to your during your first few weeks, or leave your door open and let others come to you!
3. Take Fun Classes Related to Your Interests
I’d encourage you to consider taking one or two discussion based classes with smaller class sections or a specific discussion meeting time to get some socialization in with your classwork! I personally liked History 125 – Green Screen, but you can take any class that interests you!
Those are my three top ways to get to know people at UW-Madison, so you can find the niche that fits you!
