When I first got to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I felt like a tiny fish in a vast ocean. Everyone seemed already to have their group, their clubs, their plan. Meanwhile, I was just trying to figure out how not to get lost in the Humanities building. But the good news? That lost feeling doesn’t last forever, and you shouldn’t have it all figured out on day one.
What helped me the most was just saying yes to everything, even if I didn’t want to go. I went to random club meetings, movie nights, dinners, and other events. I didn’t end up sticking with everything, but I always met someone new or learned something that stuck with me. You never know where one random event will lead or who you will become friends with as a result of it.
Don’t underestimate your dorm! I used to think getting involved meant joining some club or Greek life, but some of my closest friends came from meeting people in my dorm on game days, late-night conversations in the hall, lounge, or bonding over a class we had together.
Most importantly, pursue the things that you actually care about and are curious about! I have friends who joined the rock climbing club for the fun of it, and they ended up sticking with it over the years. Being around people who genuinely share your interests makes all the difference.
So if you’re feeling a little lost right now, that’s okay. Just keep showing up. Your group of people is at this school too!
