As an incoming freshman, choosing your major may feel daunting. Once I came to college I had this idea in my head that once I chose my major, I was stuck. However, now being a junior, I have changed my major three times. You have time! Take a deep breath! Here are some tips to avoid panic when you’re questioning your major!
1. Reflect on Your Passions and Interests:
Think about what makes you happy. If you enjoy writing, like me, look into the creative writing program or take some journalism classes! Start with your interests and build from there.
2. Evaluate Your Strengths and Weaknesses
What are you good at? Although you should also focus on your passions, don’t make college harder for yourself than it needs to be! If you’re good at a subject, hone in on that and pursue something in that field!
3. Explore Different Fields
If you aren’t sure what stirs your interests, take different types of classes to further explore different subject matters. Don’t be afraid to take classes ranging from Chemistry 103 to Journalism 201!
4. Listen to Yourself, Not Others
Listen to your heart. Don’t let your mom, dad, sister, or friends define your future. Don’t let somebody choose your major for you! Your future belongs to you and is in your hands.
5. Schedule An Advising Appointment
Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Schedule an advising appointment on Starfish through your student portal. Your advisor is a crucial tool for your success– use it!
