How to Choose Extracurriculars: 3 Tips to Find the Right Fit

You’re a future Badger! There are many amazing opportunities on campus and numerous Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) to explore. Establishing what RSO is best for you can be overwhelming, so here are 3 tips to find the right fit:

1. Establish your interests.

Before joining an organization, it is essential to establish your interests. Take some time to think about what you are passionate about. Are you interested in leadership development, community service projects, or academic research? What are your values? Recognizing who you are and what excites you will help find organizations that align with your goals.

2. Attend the Student Organization Fair.

Each semester, a Student Organization Fair is held at the Kohl Center on campus. This is a great opportunity to explore hundreds of RSOs and extracurriculars. Keep an open mind when talking to different booths. Ask about their purpose, membership requirements, and values. Don’t be afraid to sign up for the email list or take informational material, it will help you stay in touch after the fair has ended.

3. Talk to professors and advisors.

Adjusting to college and navigating your interests can be overwhelming. Professors and advisors can provide recommendations based on your academic interests and career goals. They will help you establish what organizations are right for you, and what is a realistic time commitment.

Take advantage of the resources and opportunities that come with being a Badger. It may seem overwhelming at first, but remember, your professors and advisors are here to help!
