Three Ways to Build Community on Campus

Starting a new chapter in college can be frightening, but every first year student is in the same boat. This is a time to learn more about yourself and who you want to surround yourself with. Making friends at a large university can feel intimidating, but a vast student population gives students the opportunity to meet a variety of people. Here are three ways that can make immersing yourself in a new college environment easier!

  1. Adventure around the area – It is always a good idea to familiarize yourself with a new place. This can boost your confidence around campus and give you ideas of things to do with peers. By understanding your environment, you have many suggestions for fun activities.
  2. Hang out in common spaces – Most residence halls have a lounge or some sort of gathering location. Speaking from experience, people are more likely to make conversation with someone who is approachable, so do not be afraid to let your guard down a little bit.
  3. Engage with those around you – Whether it is your neighbors in your residence hall, someone in your class, or joining a table that has an empty seat at a dining hall – it is a good idea to introduce yourself to other first year students. As time goes on, you may start to recognize more faces around campus, which will make you feel at home.

Since UW-Madison has so many ways to get involved, you will always be meeting new people. This exposure makes it certain that you will find your community on campus.
