3 Ways to Make New Connections as a First-Year Student 

Making friends when you are younger seems so easy. You could meet someone at the park, play for hours and become besties. You can sit next to someone in class and just like that, you text daily. Making friends in college can seem daunting, but with a few tips, it can be just as effortless as when you were a child. Whether new to the city or native, transitioning to college can be intimidating. Lucky for you I am here to help with some tips that can aid you in breaking the ice and finding your people.   

Join an organization.  

The WIN website is a great resource for finding a community that shares your interest. There are nearly 1,000 clubs and organizations. Talking to new people is much easier when you have shared interests.  

Host a game night in your dorm.   

Who doesn’t love a good game night? Most everyone wants to meet new people, why not make it fun? By hosting a game night, you can get to know your dorm mates. Here’s a list of fun and easy activities to help you get started.   

Become a Badger Volunteer.  

Volunteering is an excellent way to give back to the community and meet new people. The Morgridge Center for Public Service has volunteer assignments every semester and supplies transportation. Here you’ll have the chance to build genuine relationships and your resume.
