Breaking the Ice at UW-Madison

Entering a new university can feel cold as ice, especially somewhere as cold as the campus of the University of Wisconsin. It can be intimidating having to think of ways to approach new situations and people, which is why it is important to be able to navigate new situations. Conversations come more organically when people have shared experiences, so what better way to meet people than to share an experience on campus.

There are various student organizations that encourage and invite freshman to join. These are great ways to meet people who share similar interests and skills, and will create a community for you that will make you feel home away from home. Such activities include Greek Life, Recreational Sports, or even various Arts.

Another great way to feel connected to students is to make use of the many spaces on campus that make UW-Madison so unique. People love sharing food at the terrace, working out at the Nicholas Recreation Center, and jumping around at Camp Randall Stadium. These are the places where you will make so many memories!

Finally, take advantage of the people you will meet in your classes. They are probably nervous too, and want to make friends. You never know who you will meet at such a big school! Be sure to tap the person next to you and be the friendly face that you would hope to receive from someone else on campus.
