Tips For Making Friends At Your New Home For The Next Four Years

As you begin your new journey, the lingering question of “How am I supposed to make friends?” is one that we have all experienced. Here are a few tips that helped me navigate making new friends.

Join an organization!

The University of Wisconsin-Madison offers several opportunities to find organizations that offer something you are interested in. While it may be deemed as a scary opportunity to take advantage of, this is a great way to meet people with similar interests. Check out the Wisconsin Involvement site to look through the various clubs and organizations offered here. At the student org fair, you can go talk to them and introduce yourself before the first meeting.

The Wisconsin Involvement Network is home to all student organization pages.

Attend first-year events like Convocation!

The Wisconsin Welcome is a great resource to keep up to date with events that will allow you to meet new people. There are various activities offered which allow for socializing amongst a group of individuals who are experiencing something new with you! Some of my closes friends were sitting next to me at Convocation.

Decorate Your Dorm Room Door!

Your dorm is your home for the next 9 months. Take advantage of putting some of your likes and interests on your door. It can allow for someone to start a conversation based on something you are both interested in.
