Eating in Madison

College is the first time in a lot of people’s lives where they are completely free to make their own decisions.  This can be a time where people learn a lot about themselves and what they truly value.  This applies to all aspects of college life.

One big part of freedom in college is what we choose to eat.  As a freshman living in the dorms, you will have a lot of options; some of which are healthy, a lot of which are not healthy.  I am here to offer you a few tips on how to stay healthy during your freshman year of college.

  1. Keep your portion sizes under control: Living in the dorms, you will have access to many discounts for your meals.  This will tempt you to get a lot of food and potentially over eat.  It is important to be aware of how much you are eating and to eat for fuel, not entertainment.
  2. Discipline yourself on what you eat: As I said before, there will be plenty of options in the dorms (both healthy and unhealthy).  It’s important to supplement your diet with lots of vegetables, fruits, and protein if you want to stay as healthy as you can.

Both of these pieces of advice are things that I learned during freshman year, and I wish somebody had told me before.  Having said all of this, college can be very stressful at times and treating yourself to an ice cream cone or another type of desert isn’t always a bad way to boost your mental health and self esteem.
